Authorized interpreters and translators

The Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency authorizes interpreters and translators. The purpose of state authorization is to produce competent and reliable interpreters and translators for the needs of the community-at-large, since those who employ the services often have very limited possibilities of verifying the qualifications of an interpreter or a translator. Authorized interpreters and translators have taken a proficiency examination arranged by the Agency.

Authorized interpreters interpret oral conversations and speeches. The title of authorized interpreter is a protected professional title. An authorized interpreter is entitled, on passing a special examination, to obtain a certificate of specialist competence as interpreter within a given specialist field. There are two such fields; health and medical care services and law and the judiciary constitute. Interpreters are not tested in simultaneous interpretation or other proficiencies in connection with conference interpretation.

Authorized translators translate written documents. The title of authorized translator is a protected professional title. Translations of documents may be legally just as binding as the original and must therefore often be made by an authorized translator.

The Agency supervises the authorized interpreters and translators. Complaints made against an interpreter or a translator may be reported to the Agency. If there is reason for it, the Agency can take disciplinary actions, either by giving the interpreter or translator a warning or by revoking the authorization.

An authorization is valid for five years and can be renewed afterwards.

The Agency does not supply any interpreting or translating services.

Authorization as an interpreter

Interpreters are authorized between Swedish and their interpreting language. An authorized interpreter may also have a certificate of special competence as a court interpreter and/or a medical interpreter.  An interpreter may also be authorized in several languages.

There are authorized interpreters into 38 languages. Not all languages have interpreters with certificates of special competence as court interpreters or medical interpreters.

This register includes only the authorized interpreters who have permitted publication of their details. The interpreters have themselves chosen which personal details may be published. If you are seeking the services of an authorized interpreter, you must contact the interpreter directly.

The Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency does not offer interpreting services itself.

Authorization as a translator

Translators may be authorized either into or from Swedish. However, an authorized translator may have multiple authorizations. Only specific individuals may be authorized, not legal entities.

There are authorized translators from 29 languages into Swedish and from Swedish into 26 languages.

This register includes only the authorized translators who have permitted publication of their details. The translators have themselves chosen which personal details may be published. If you are seeking the services of an authorized translator, you must contact the translator directly.

The Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency does not offer translation services itself.
