GIF - Group and Personal Insurance

Group and personal insurance is also known as GIF. This is an insurance a state public authority can acquire for foreign individuals or groups who are affiliated with the authority and lack adequate insurance protection.

Who is covered?

If you’re a foreign visitor at a public authority – such as a guest teacher, guest researcher or another type of visitor – you’re covered by the Swedish State Group and Personal Insurance (GIF) during your time in Sweden.

This insurance is available to for example foreign visitors, course participants, guest researchers, guest lecturers and accompanying family.

Sida (Swedish International Development Cooperation) courses

Individuals who participate in Sida’s ITP courses are provided insurance through a specific agreement. Those who arrange this type of course submit a list of participants to Kammarkollegiet in order to arrange coverage.

What does the insurance cover?

This insurance provides the following coverage:

  • personal injury protection
  • medical and dental coverage 
  • home transport
  • personal property coverage
  • third party liability
  • legal expenses 

When and where does the insurance apply?

This Group and Personal Insurance provides 24-hour coverage in Sweden and also throughout the Schengen area if you have a Schengen visa.


There is a 1,500 kr deductible for personal property claims.

If you were insured previously, the 2011 document contains the correct information for your insurance. If you were insured in 2015 or later, the 2015 document contains information on the current insurance.
